The Ides of March is a political drama about a campaign race to get elected, which would then lead for a chance to run as president of the United States.
THE ACTORS
George Clooney does a great job as the almost idealistic Mike Morris. He is believeable mostly, but at some times, George Clooney appears and it draws you slightly out of the movie.
Ryan Gosling is perfect as Stephen Meyers, secretary of the campaign. He plays the character as laid back on the surface, but as soon as something goes wrong his actions become more erratic and is always trying to regain control.
Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Giamatti also do great as opposing campaign managers, both are subtle yet brilliant in their roles and are the driving force behind the movie when Gosling isn’t on screen.
THE DIRECTOR
George Clooney also directed this film with a fairly reserved view. It more than does the job here, with a film like this, there are no fancy camera angles or cinematography needed here as most of the scenes take place in bland offices and suitably so.
CONCLUSION
The Ides of March is a slow burning political drama with some great performances. Personally the film didn’t captivate me as much as i feel that it was working for. I think that if i was majorly into politics, especially American politics, this would be my favourite film of the year, but i simply am not. The film is extremely well made, the screenplay, the actor’s, the directing, everything. But it certainly lacks for the general movie go-er.
If you are interested in what goes on behind the scenes in American politics you should definitely check it out. I still had some fun with it, mainly because of the performances though, so if you aren;t into politics, give it a miss.
