‘Big Hero 6’ is Disney Animations attempt at a Marvel film and while the plot is predictable, they have managed to capture all the fun of reading an awesome comic and throw it up on the screen, simply put, this film is an absolute joy to watch.
The animation is absolutely breathtaking, ridiculously beautiful and by far some of the best cinematography of any film of 2014, bar none. The film opens on a neon-tinged amalgam skyline of San Francisco and Tokyo, think about that for a second, the quirkiness and futuristic style of Tokyo with the sprawling skyline of San Francisco, perfectly animated and shot brilliantly. One other aspect of the animation that stood out to be is the characters hair, in past animated films hair has always been one of the harder designs to make look real, Pixar have it down but it took them long enough and even still, it doesn’t look photo-realistic, however the hair on the characters in ‘Big Hero 6’ looks real, it absolutely blew me away how perfect the hair looks, how it flows and the movement, phenomenal animation.
Every single voice actor in this film was perfect for their role, however the stand out, by far is Scott Adsit as Baymax, a “robot nurse”. The delivery of Baymax’s oft hilarious lines is made only more hilarious by Adsit’s purposely flat, almost monotonous delivery. This is not to play down the other performances, it’s just that Baymax is so lovable and hilarious that everyone else seems to take a back seat when he is in a scene.
This film is not only gorgeous and fun, it is genuinely hilarious, admittedly, most of the jokes rely on Baymax but Baymax is so lovable and perfectly crafted that it doesn’t feel forced, in fact everything about the film feels so genuine and natural.
The plot is fairly basic and you can guess where the plot is going within the first 20 minutes but at that point you’re having so much fun that you simply don’t care, you’re just happy to be along for the ride.
The score is ridiculously perfect, upbeat and futuristic when it needs to be and dramatic and tense when the scene calls for it, not only that but it is one of those scores that you could listen to on its own and still feel the thrills and excitement in the music.
The action scenes are well choreographed, creative and the villain leads to some interesting fight scenes with unique combinations of powers, the action scenes truly need to be seen to be believed.
In conclusion, this is a paint-by-numbers plot with some breath taking animation, great performances, a thrilling pace and flat out fun, you owe it to yourself to watch this film!
