The less you know about Midnight in Paris’ plot the better you will be surprised by the film and gain more enjoyment from it. I think that this was the viewpoint of the movie studio and Woody Allen himself as the trailer for the film gives next to nothing away.

THE ACTORS
Owen Wilson, Tom Hiddleston, Kathy Bates, Adrien Brody, Marion Cotillard, Rachel McAdams, Michael Sheen, Alison Pill, the list goes on and on. All put in great performances and are entirely believable in their roles.

The main character Gil, played by Owen Wilson however is played brilliantly. Throughout the whole movie Gil is in denial about various events and is both confused and excited by what is going on around him and Wilson captures this perfectly.

THE DIRECTOR
This is the first Woody Allen film i have ever seen. Allen turns Paris into a gorgeous environment in both states as it were. Other than the beautiful cinematography, Allen does a pretty average job of directing this film, there are no inventive shots or anything that makes you go “wow” but it works none the less.

CONCLUSION
Midnight in Paris is a a film with a truly interesting and unique story which, i feel could have been presented better with a more imaginative director. However, this is clearly Allen’s personal love letter to Paris as it is held in such sentimental light that it is sometimes too perfect. The cast all do a great job though and it is beautiful to look at but with nothing of notable merit in a year filled with great, inventive movies, it just doesn’t cut it.
